Why Does Dairy Queen Have a Different Menu in Texas?
You might first think it’s because Dairy Queen was founded in Texas. You’re not the only one who would think that. As of 2017, Texas had about 600 Dairy Queens, the most of any state.
The first Dairy Queen was opened in Joliet, Illinois, even though the chain is so famous in Texas that it’s called “the Texas stop sign.”
But that choice is different for a reason, and it has to do with selling and buying. Around 1947, Rolly Klose bought the franchise rights for Dairy Queen in Texas from International Dairy Queen.
Klose then sold the exclusive rights for DQ to several restaurant owners, who began to try out new things to sell besides soft-serve and treats.
When International DQ bought back Texas Dairy Queen in 1980, the restaurant owners bargained with the company so that they could keep selling Texas-only items and use their own marketing style.
These aren’t the only unique things that franchisees have made. The famous Blizzard was also made by a franchisee.
